Facing History and Ourselves Europe Trip Itinerary April 15-28, 2008

Tuesday, April 15 – Flight from Boston to Munich.

Wednesday, April 16 – Arrive in Munich in the morning. Check into Wombat’s Hostel and take some time to shower and get changed. Meet downstairs at 1 p.m. for a walking tour of the history of the Nazi Party in Munich. Tour will end by 4 p.m. At this time, students will accompany chaperones to either the Olympiapark or the BMW Museum with the exception of Ms. Radden’s group, who will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Thursday, April 17 – Meet downstairs at 8:00 for a tour of Dachau Concentration Camp. Arrive back at Munich train station at approximately 3:00 p.m. Students will again accompany chaperones to either BMW Museum or Olympiapark, with the exception of Mr. Malanga’s group, who will complete the blog assignment for the day, and will meet at Marienplatz fountain at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be at the open air market.

Friday, April 18 – Our bus will pick us up at our hostel at 7:30 a.m. We will travel from Munich to Mad Ludwig’s Schloss Neuschwanstein, (1h50m) the inspiration for Walt Disney’s castle. We will arrive at the castle at 9:00 a.m. and leave at approximately 12:30 for Prague (4h05m). We should arrive in Prague at approximately 6:00 p.m. After checking into the Czech Inn, the group will then take a tour of the Museum of Communism. The tour should last until approximately one hour. We will then have dinner in Wenceslas Square followed by supervised free time with the exception of Ms. Pisano’s group, who will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Saturday, April 19 – Students will meet downstairs at 9:00 a.m. for a guided tour of the city, including the well preserved Jewish Quarter. The tour should end at 12:30. After lunch, the students will accompany chaperones to the castle. The group will then be given the option to tour the Kafka Museum for an additional fee. After dinner, students will be given supervised free time in the city center with the exception of Ms. Smith’s group, who will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Sunday, April 20 – We will leave Prague by bus at approximately 9:00 a.m. for Krakow (4h34m). We should arrive at approximately 2:00 p.m. After checking into Nathan’s Villa later that afternoon, we will travel to the former home of Sonia Weitz to see a tree planted by her father for her at her birth. It was the only tree in the courtyard that survived the Nazi occupation of Krakow. Mr. Louis’ group will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Monday, April 21 – We will meet in the lobby at 9:00 and then board the bus for a trip to Auschwitz. After a guided tour of the camp, we will travel back to Krakow, where the group will be given free time in the town center. The blog assignment for the day will be completed by Mr. Ensdorf’s group.

Tuesday, April 22 – Students will meet in lobby by 9:00 a.m. for a bus trip to Lublin (4h38m). We will arrive at Hotel Campanile at 1:45 p.m. After we check in, we will go into town and have lunch, immediately followed by a scavenger hunt. The group will break into teams and have a scavenger hunt for evidence of large pre-war Jewish population. Group will meet at 6:00 p.m. for dinner in city center, where we will spend the rest of the evening with the exception of Mr. Love’s group, who will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Wednesday, April 23 – The group will meet in the lobby at 9:00 a.m. where we will check out and then take the bus to Majdanek for a tour of the former concentration camp. After the tour at approximately 12:00, we will have lunch at KFC and then drive from Lublin to Berlin where we will check into the hostel for the evening. Kassie’s group will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Thursday, April 24 – The group will meet in the lobby at 10:00 a.m. We will take a walking tour of Cold War/Holocaust/WWII sites of significance. The tour will end at approximately 1:00 p.m. and will end at the beginning of Unter Den Linden Street, one of the most famous streets in the world. At this point, groups will break up and students will choose one of two activities (museum, zoo, tour, etc.) with the exception of Ms. Radden’s group, who will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Friday, April 25 – Everyone will meet in the lobby at 8:00 a.m. We will check out of the hostel and take the bus to Nuremburg (4h19m), where we will visit the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. We will then return to the bus stop at the train station for lunch. Immediately afterwards, we will drive to Munich (1h48m), where we will arrive at approximately 5:00 p.m. We will check into Wombat’s Hostel and break for dinner. After dinner, the group will have supervised free time in the city center with the exception of Mr. Malanga’s group, who will plan the daily blog entry.

Saturday, April 26 – We will check out of the hostel early and travel to the airport for our flight to Paris. We will take a tour of the city, highlighting points of interest for the resistance movement. Ms. Pisano’s group will complete the blog assignment for the day. After breaking for dinner, two different activities will be chosen and students will accompany the chaperones on these activities.

Sunday, April 27 – Group will visit Holocaust museum for discussion with survivors and recap of camps visited. Ms. Smith’s group will complete the blog assignment for the day.

Monday, April 28 - Check out of hostel and travel to airport for flight home.
